5 Eyewear Tips for Office Workers

Working in an office can be difficult at times for those of us who wear glasses, especially when computers are involved. Between swapping from distance to reading glasses, staring at screens all day and trying to find frames that suit our work and home wardrobes, there’s a lot to get stressed out about. But don’t worry if you’re finding office life tough on your eyes, simply follow the tips below and find out how to make wearing glasses work for you.

  1. Give Reading Glasses a Try

If you wear glasses as part of your everyday routine, but don’t change them when you’re reading reports or documents at work, you might want to think about trying a pair of reading glasses. These are ideal if you struggle with both distance and short sightedness, but prioritise your distance vision for practical reasons. Keeping a pair of reading glasses on your desk at work means that you’ll never be caught short, and your eyes won’t become tired from reading without the appropriate glasses. Unfortunately, this does mean no more excuses for not reading that important file!

  1. Take Computer Breaks

Although it is not proven that using computers all day can damage your eyesight, many people experience tired, dry or itchy eyes after looking at screens for long-periods. If you wear glasses, you may be more susceptible to this, so it is helpful to take a short break from using your computer every half hour or so. This break could be to make a cup of tea, or simply to look across to the other side of the room and focus on a far-away object for a couple of minutes. If you’re going to do this, it might also help to adopt a thoughtful expression, so that your boss doesn’t think you’re just daydreaming.

It’s important to be comfortable at work, but it’s also important to look and feel professional. When choosing your frame design, be sure to keep in mind that you’ll be wearing your glasses at work as well as at home. For this reason, it might be best to think twice before choosing the most quirky or dramatic pair, as they likely won’t complement every outfit you have. Choosing monochrome or muted shades can be a good way to go if you work in a more serious atmosphere, where leopard print or neon frames are less likely to be appreciated.

Every single one of us has lost our glasses at some point, even if just for five minutes or so. While this might not be such a problem at home, when you’re at work it can seriously hinder your productivity and the overall quality of your work. If you know that you’re prone to losing things, keep a spare pair of glasses in your desk drawer and make sure you always put them back when you find your main pair. Alternatively, you could avoid the hassle of losing them altogether by putting them on a specially-designed chain and wearing them around your neck.

  1. Change Your Computer Habits

Taking breaks from using a computer is one thing, but if you’re really committed to preventing eye strain at work there are a few more things you can do. One is to change your screen settings, so that the brightness is reduced and the glare from the screen isn’t causing your eyes to strain. You can also reduce the blue light if you’re working in the evenings, which has been shown to help you sleep better. Sitting at least 30cm away from your screen is essential to prevent tired eyes and over-exposure to artificial light, so it’s always better to buy a pair of reading glasses than to sit with your nose almost touching the screen. Whether you’re experiencing eye strain at work or want to prevent it, these habits will set you in good stead for the future.
