Reading Glasses – the perfect fit

Reading glasses that don't fit can't be good

Reading glasses that don’t fit properly will not only be annoying and potentially painful to wear; they could also affect your vision. It’s important that your glasses sit comfortably on your face so that you get the very best performance each time you put them on.

Fitting Reading Glasses

If, like many people, you’re taking advantage of the internet to buy reading glasses, you’re going to have access to a wide range of styles and to excellent prices. Ensuring that your glasses fit properly, however is also important, so when they arrive, take the time to put them on carefully and think about what adjustments may need to be made in order to get the best out of them:

  • Bridge – your reading glasses will sit on the bridge of your nose. The fit needs to be firm enough so that the glasses don’t slip when you move your head, but not so tight that they dig into the skin. Putting your glasses on and then tilting your head downwards will help you to see whether the fit around the bridge is tight enough. If you’re not used to wearing glasses, you might find the whole sensation a bit odd, and it’s worth giving your glasses a couple of days’ use so that you get used to the feel of wearing them before you decide whether they feel comfortable or not.
  • Ears – the arms of your glasses will reach behind your ears. Depending on the style of your reading glasses, the arms may be almost straight with a slight bend at the end, or they may be more curved. Again, you will need to get used to wearing them, but if you feel they are rubbing behind your ears, you need to consider getting them adjusted.
  • Face – if the arms of your reading glasses are set too narrow, you will feel them constricting your face between your ears and your eyes. To avoid discomfort or marking of the skin, get your glasses adjusted if you feel they are too tight on your face.

Even if you have bought your glasses online, you should be able to take them to any optician for adjustment. It’s always recommended to ask a professional to do this form you, to remove the risk of damaging your reading glasses. Once they fit properly, you will be able to get years of good use from them.
