Once you've got your reading glasses, don't neglect your visual health.
If it’s been a shock to your system that you now need reading glasses, you may be forgiven for thinking that you’ve got your vision sorted and you don’t need to do anything else. Whether you’ve recently got glasses for the first time, or you’re used to having your vision corrected, it’s important that you don’t forget your ongoing visual health.
Checking your Reading Glasses
Whilst your reading glasses may be fixing your vision at the moment, there’s always the possibility that your eyesight will continue to change. Your optician will recall you at regular intervals – probably once a year now that you have a prescription – and you should always make sure you make an appointment when the recall comes through. It’s only when your sight is failing that you realise how important it is, and today, anything from reading glasses to laser surgery is available to make sure that you have good quality vision for as long as possible – so don’t put it off:
- Regular checks – always see your optician for regular sight tests. Even if your prescription hasn’t changed in a year or two, it’s reassuring to know that you are using the right strength reading glasses and that your eyes themselves are healthy.
- Reporting problems – if you are experiencing vision problems, having headaches or any other symptoms that could be linked to a change in your eyesight, go and see your optician straight away. Your symptoms could be an indication that your vision is impaired, or that your current reading glasses aren’t strong enough. There could also be no link at all between your physical symptoms and your sight, but it’s best to rule it in or out. Don’t suffer in silence because you’re worried about a stronger prescription – it’s better to get your vision corrected than to ignore it.
- Family history – if you have a history of eye-related illnesses in your family, such as glaucoma, you should make sure your optician knows about it and watch out for any potential signs. This will help you to catch the problem before it becomes too bad and your optician and your doctor will be able to help you to get the treatment you need.
If you have any worries about your vision, always pop in and see your optician. It may be as easy to correct as adjusting the fit of your reading glasses, so it’s worth taking the time to check things out.
