If you suspect you need reading glasses, make an appointment with your optician.
When your vision starts to deteriorate, it can be worrying, particularly if you’ve always enjoyed the benefits of good sight. Sometimes your vision changes with age, which is something we all have to learn to accept. For others, vision changes throughout life and glasses are a permanent feature. Even for those who have had laser surgery to correct their vision problems, changes later in life can lead to the need for reading glasses.
Testing for Reading Glasses
Whatever the history of your eyesight, if you are finding it difficult to focus when you are reading or using the computer, you should go and see your optician. If you’ve never been to the optician before, talk to friends and neighbours to get some recommendations so that you know you’re going to an optician you can trust. You’ll be given a full sight test, which can take around 30 minutes and from that test, you’ll get a prescription if the optician has noticed any problems with your vision. It’s a painless process and as long as you’re absolutely honest with the optician about what you can see and what you can’t, they will be able to help you get a prescription for reading glasses that will make your life much easier. A standard sight test includes:
- History – the optician will normally have a brief chat with you about the problems you’re having with your vision, whether you’ve had eye problems in the past and find out what you know about the history of vision problems in your family. This will help them to look for particular things whilst they conduct the test.
- Healthy eyes – it’s important that your eyes are healthy and an eye test will also include investigations to make sure that everything is as it should be. Opticians have special equipment to help them see into your eyes and check for potential problems.
- Sight test – opticians use the traditional letter boards to test what you can and can’t see with each eye and then use lenses to determine what helps to improve your vision. They will also use focus and colour tests so that every aspect of your vision is properly checked.
Once your sight test is finished, your optician will tell you what they have found. If you need a prescription, you will get a written copy, which means you can buy your reading glasses from anywhere – you don’t have to buy them from your optician.
