Long sightedness is something that comes with age, and as eyesight deteriorates over time, we are more likely to need reading glasses for everyday use.
With an estimated 18 million people in the UK requiring reading glasses for close-up vision, Hyperopia or Presbyopia are common conditions for people of all ages – but particularly with the older generation. With advancing age, reading glasses become more and more of an everyday thing.
Currently in Britain, one in four people over the age of forty five, one in three of those over fifty five, and almost half of those over sixty have trouble seeing things close up. Although it is possible to be born with, or to develop poor vision during early childhood, Hyperopia/Presbyopia is more likely to happen over a period of time.
Why Do We Need Reading Glasses When We Are Old?
Many people will start to need reading glasses after the age of forty, and some will suffer from failing eyesight prior to this. Just as we accept other ailments that tend to set in as our youth slips away, we have also recognised that reading glasses are just a part of later life. But why is it that our eye sight deteriorates when we get older?
The deterioration in the eye’s ability to focus is a result of lens hardening and/or the weakening of the eye muscles. When the lens becomes harder, it is less able to bend or change shape, and as a result, it is less adept to achieve definition and focus.
Although some can be born with long-sightedness, and toddlers can develop it very easily, children in general, are more capable of focusing from the horizon to close to the end of their nose. This focal point will gradually move away from us as time goes by.
What Will We Need Reading Glasses For?
As we struggle to focus on things that are close to us, we will it difficult to read printed material. Those who work or enjoy pastimes with details and precision, such as knitting, sewing, weaving, woodwork, carving, art, or design will need reading glasses to aid their craft.
If your profession requires a lot of reading or computing, you are probably more likely to suffer from the condition known as Presbyopia – you will need glasses earlier.
