Reading Glasses – Eyes Begin at 40

When you get to 40, look out for signs that you might need reading glasses.

Life begins at 40, or so the saying goes. It was once true that by the time you hit your 40s you were either well-established in your career or coming towards the end of your child-rearing duties, with less debt, less hassle and a lot to look forward to. In today’s world, we move jobs more, start families later and spend more money than we used to, but one thing certainly hasn’t changed – the need for reading glasses as we get older.

Why You Need Reading Glasses

It’s one of those things that we take as a sure sign of ageing – the need to carry around a pair of reading glasses so that we can see what’s going on close to us. Once you get to 40, you’re more likely to suffer from a condition known as Presbyopia. This is where the lens in your eye and the muscles around it become less flexible and so you find it more difficult to adjust from distance vision to close vision. Tasks like reading, writing, sewing and crafts become blurry and can cause eye strain. Of course, you may choose to ignore these warning signs until you really can’t focus any more, but in fact, the sooner you get off to an optician and get a diagnosis, the happier you should be. With your vision corrected, you can function as normal.

Reading Glasses – Don’t Dread 40

Don’t let the thought of reading glasses fill you with panic about being 40. Most of us still feel young at 40 and indeed, our bodies often don’t let us down until we’re well over that milestone age. In the grand scheme of your general health, a pair of reading glasses is nothing to be worried about, and you might well find that you don’t notice any symptoms until well into your 40s or beyond. It’s just that once you’ve got to 40, you’re more likely to notice a problem – whether you’re used to great vision, or you’re a regular glasses or contact lens wearer. Like all health issues, it’s far better to go to the experts for help and advice than to put things off and pretend that everything’s fine – you could be doing your vision more harm than good in the long run.
