Reading Glasses – Better to be Safe than Sorry

It's always worth paying a visit to the optician if you think you need reading glasses.

As you age, it’s tempting to ignore the signs of a failing body and keep going as though you are still 18 years old. It’s important to realise, however, even in these days of trying to attain eternal youth, that your body will start letting you down at some point. One of the best ways of handling this is to catch problems early and do something about them – like finding out more about reading glasses.

Reading Glasses or Something More?

If you’ve been lucky enough to have perfect vision throughout your life, you may be disconcerted to discover that things are starting to get a bit blurry. For quite some time, you can overcome this problem by holding papers, menus and letters further away from your eyes until the words come into focus. You may not think about getting help until your arms can no longer extend as far as you need them to – which is why this condition is often referred to as “short arm disease” by opticians. The dangers of ignoring these warning signs are two-fold:

  • Other vision problems – you may be holding out on a eye test because you don’t want to admit that age is having a negative effect on your vision. What you may not realise is that you have other vision problems, which an optician will spot using their thorough tests. Whilst Presbyopia, the condition that is resolved by reading glasses, is fairly benign, other eye conditions may not be, and it’s important that you rule out any other problems as soon as possible.
  • General health issues – eye strain and headaches are common side-effects of poor vision and by putting off an eye exam, you are letting yourself in for more general health problems. Bending over to read things clearly, moving things in an out of focus to try and find the right position and not being able to read in important situations such as whilst driving can all be dangerous.
  • It’s more than likely that your blurry vision is just age creeping up on you, but it’s always worth getting your vision checked out as soon as you notice there’s a problem. That way, you can solve the problem and get on with your life with one less thing to worry about.
