Reading Glasses – Aftercare

Once you've found the perfect reading glasses, don't forget to look after them - and your sight.

Now that you’ve discovered you need reading glasses, you’ve had your eyes tested, got your prescription and chosen your frames. You’ll have to get used to wearing them and carrying them round with you, but at least your vision has improved and you don’t have to screw up your eyes to see what’s written on the menu or in your post. And although your reading glasses probably weren’t too expensive, you need to learn to look after them so that they can be useful to you for as long as possible.

Caring for Reading Glasses

In general, there’s not much to do when it comes to looking after your glasses, but it’s important that you do what little there is. Uncared for, reading glasses can become scratched, bent and damaged and that in turn will affect your sight. Straining your eyes to read through damaged glasses could change your prescription, meaning you’ll have to go back to the opticians for another sight test and possibly even have to wear glasses more frequently:

Use the glasses case – your reading glasses will come with a glasses case and you can buy additional cases if you want to. Because you don’t wear reading glasses all the time, it’s important that they are safe when you’re not using them – and the safest place for them is in their case. Whether that’s on your bedside cabinet at night, your handbag or briefcase during the day or next to the remote control in the sitting room, keeping them in the case will prevent them from getting dusty or marked.

Clean properly – you will be given a cloth to clean your lenses with. Glasses cleaning cloths are specially designed to clean gently without scratching, so make sure you have a cloth handy and use it, rather than resorting to the edges of clothing or kitchen roll to clean your reading glasses. You can also buy specialist cleaning solutions which will help to keep your lenses sparkling. Don’t forget to clean the frames and joints regularly too – they can get clogged up with dust and dead skin.

Check the fit – if you feel your reading glasses are too loose or too tight on your face, get them adjusted – many opticians will do this for you free of charge. If your glasses are uncomfortable, you may stop wearing them, which will be bad for your eyes, or they could fall off and get damaged. In addition, poorly-fitting glasses will not correct your vision properly.

Check your eyes – once your eyes have started to change, you need to make sure you have regular eye exams to make sure you are using the right prescription. If you notice any change in your vision, get regular headaches or feel you are straining to see, make an appointment with your optician immediately. Otherwise, make sure you return when you are recalled so that your prescription is always up to date.
