How do you know when you need prescription glasses?
It can be disconcerting to find that you can’t see quite as well as you used to. There are many warning signs of a deterioration in vision and as soon as you find yourself narrowing your eyes to read road signs, or getting headaches when you’re watching television, it’s worth visiting an optician to see if you need prescription glasses. Don’t simply go out and choose reading glasses off the shelf – they might not be what you need at all.
Reading and Prescription Glasses – the Difference
There are differences between prescription glasses and reading glasses, and it’s because those differences are important that you should pop in to see an optician before you buy frames and lenses. The reason you’re having trouble with your vision may be because one eye has become slightly short-sighted, or you may have developed an astigmatism, which alters the focus of your eye. Until you know what’s causing your vision problems, you can’t correct them properly.
- Age – as with many health problems, changes in your sight can be age-related. This is particularly true for people who need reading glasses. This particular variation in sight doesn’t happen until you’re over 40, so if you’re younger than that and you are having difficulty seeing clearly, you may need prescription glasses instead.
- Health – some health conditions affect vision and you may also suffer from inherited eye conditions such as myopia, or short-sightedness, and Retinitis Pigmentosa, which affects night vision. If you know that your parents or members of your extended family have suffered from an eye condition, or if you have diabetes or any other condition that can affect eye health, prescription glasses are more likely to be the answer than reading glasses.
- General eyesight – if you spend a lot of your time looking at a computer screen, or working with screens of any type, your vision could suffer. You should always take 5 or 10 minutes every hour to be away from the screen and re-focus your eyes on objects at variable distances, but if you find your vision is suffering, get it checked out. You can get reading glasses specially for computer use, or you may need prescription glasses to sort out the problem.
