Don’t Take Your Prescription Glasses for Granted

If you've lived with impaired sight, you'll never take prescription glasses for granted - which is why there are charities hard at work across the world bringing glasses to the masses.

In the West, we take our right to see the world clearly for granted. There is a wealth of solutions and treatments available – from laser eye treatment down to regular prescription glasses. What’s more, glasses have become something of a fashion statement. For some, even if they don’t need prescription glasses, they’ll buy fashionable frames with clear lenses just to achieve a certain look.

Prescription Glasses can Change Lives

But in some developing countries, where resources are limited, prescription glasses are far from being about fashion – they can fundamentally transform lives. In Nigeria for example there are various eye charities hard at work, including the Save the Sight, Spread the Light project. For those who have lived with impaired vision, receiving a pair of prescription glasses can be an immeasurable gift. As Henry David Thoreau said, “The eye is the jewel of the body.” Our eyesight can allow us not just to function in the world in a practical way, but can help us enjoy beauty. Volunteers at the Indo Eye Care Foundation in Nigeria have described the euphoric joy they experienced when wearing their prescription glasses for the first time.

The Miracle of Prescription Glasses

Perhaps in the UK where we can easily get our hands on the latest prescription glasses and designer frames, we take prescription glasses for granted. In a feature article in Nigeria’s the Daily Sun newspaper, one woman described receiving her prescription glasses from the Indo Eye Care Foundation as nothing short of a ‘rebirth’. The Foundation has so far issued 20,000 prescription glasses to people in Nigeria, as well as undertaking 7,000 successful corrective eye laser surgeries. Nigeria is known for its high rate of eye ailments, with a high rate of blindness due to malnutrition and poor healthcare. Promoting good eye health and a simple pair of prescription glasses can literally transform the lives of thousands of people who otherwise could be left in the dark. As one Nigerian said after receiving help from the eye charity, “I almost went blind before help came through these strangers. They are God’s angel sent to help me.”
