The new Apple tablet has triggered many column inches of debate in the news of late. The new gadget could some speculate one day replace physical books. Many may object saying that you could never replace the physical allure of a book. But the device has been praised for being strikingly beautiful as well as feeling good in your hands. What’s more, it is believed to offer users an ‘aura of cool’. The sale of physical books may drop, but demand for reading glasses could rise.

And as reading becomes sexy reading accessories such as reading glasses could become shorthand for cool. Reading can cause a strain on the eyes, especially tired eyes. And by switching from the page to screen it could, if anything, be harder on your eyes. Reading glasses could evolve to keep up with technology. Who knows? In time we could be buying reading glasses that match our gadgets in the same way that dog lovers buy their dogs outfits to match their own.

As one critic warns, if the Apple tablet takes off in the same way as the iPod did, there is a risk that “we’ll have surrendered final say over our bookshelves to companies and governments.” Hold onto your reading glasses, it could be a bumpy ride!
