We've all heard of prescription glasses fogging up, but it seems that Japanese inventors have taken this concept a little too far with glasses that fog up in order to make you blink. Continue reading →

Dry eyes? Not a nice feeling, eh? We’ve all been there – lots of work emails pinging back and forth, trying to read a map whilst concentrating on the road. There are plenty of things that can cause us to forget to blink. Blinking is essential for keeping our eyes moist and revitalised, so Japan has come up with a wacky solution – prescription glasses that fog up when you haven’t blinked for a while. You’re probably thinking, “this can’t be serious” but Masunaga Optical Manufacturing Co. Ltd in Fukui, Japan believes that their foggy answer to prescription glasses are a good solution for eye health.

Named the ‘Wink’ prescription glasses, these high tech specs can eliminate the problem of forgetting to blink. Though this is a very common with many spectacle wearers, the ‘Wink’ lenses are probably a step too far for the understated British market. Avoiding tack gizmos, English refinement will probably leave no room for this kind of wackiness.

Blinking and Prescription Glasses

The lack of blinking happens regularly for those who like to read, those who use PCs at work, and those who enjoy video games – not just people who wear prescription glasses. So this idea is probably very unlikely to take off. This coupled with the price tag of 40,000 yen (almost £200), makes this whole things just a little bit too crazy for us Brits. A built in sensor in these high tech specs can detect when the wearer has not blinked for a certain period of time, and the lenses will fog up as soon as this has been identified. Once the wearer blinks, the lenses will automatically de-fog. The ‘fog’ appearance is done by a liquid crystal display.

Stylish Prescription Glasses – The British Way

Great Britain is all about style, refinement and designer, rather than gadgetry distinction. The UK market for prescription glasses is made up of stylish frames for fashion, and most opticians now stock a designer range for prescription glasses wearers who want to maintain full eyesight while looking great. Celebrities such as Kate Moss, Gok Wan and Agyness Deyn have all influenced the UK spectacle market, making it cool to be a prescription glasses wearer.

Amazing British Style at Sight Station

If you want the designer look for less, shop online at Sight Station today. Call 01322 318 511 for further information.

It's important that your prescription glasses are comfortable to wear. Continue reading →

If you need prescription glasses, you might have to wear them all the time, or just occasionally, for reading, watching the TV or using a computer screen. However often you need to put your glasses on, it will be a much better experience if they fit well. Poorly fitting glasses can rub your nose or behind your ears, or even along your face if the arms are too tight. Take the time to get it right, so that wearing your glasses feels like second nature.

Choosing Prescription Glasses

vIf you’ve worn glasses before, you’ll probably have a good idea of what frame styles suit you and the sort of designs you’re looking for. If this is your first pair of prescription glasses, take the time to think about how you want your glasses to look and what type of frames are going to be best for you to wear. For example, whilst narrow, rectangular frames are very trendy, many people find that they’d like something bigger so that they feel they’re getting good all-round vision. Even if you’re buying your prescription glasses online, it’s a good idea to try some on in an optician’s first so that you know exactly what styles you’re looking for. Once you’ve bought your glasses and they’ve been delivered to you, you need to consider the following:

Balance – your glasses should be equally balanced on your nose, not falling to one side. They should also fit snugly against the bridge of your nose so that they don’t slip down when you bend your head forward. On the other hand, the nose pieces should not pinch your nose when you put your glasses on.

Arms – the ends of the arms should sit comfortably behind your ears – not pushing into your head and again, not slipping forward. The arms need to be away from your face so that they don’t dig into the skin between your eyes and your ears.

Folding – your prescription glasses should fold and unfold easily so that you can put them on without stretching or bending them. This is important, because you’ll need to fold them properly when they are not being worn.

Because everyone has a different face, no two pairs of glasses will fit in the same way. If you think your glasses need adjustment, take them to your optician who will be able to fit them properly so that you can put them on easily and wear them without any discomfort.

Need prescription glasses but can't afford designer frames? Get stylish, affordable glasses that look fantastic. Continue reading →

Prescription glasses are often an unwanted expense – something that you need to have, but don’t really want to spend hundreds of pounds on. For most people, expensive designer frames are out of the question – particularly when you have to pay an additional amount for the lenses. If you’re on a budget, there are plenty of affordable alternatives to designer prescription glasses that look just as good.

Finding Affordable Prescription Glasses

It’s easier than you might think to find great-looking glasses that don’t cost a fortune. Buying online is the perfect way to get your next pair of prescription glasses, for three main reasons:

Choice – when you shop online, you get access to hundreds of different frames. With a wide variety of styles, colours and patterns, there’s bound to be something that grabs your attention. Whether you need to wear your prescription glasses all the time, or just for specific tasks, you’ll be able to find a style that works for your face shape – along with plenty of advice on how to choose the best frames for you.

Price – if you’re on a budget, price is a really important consideration. Online shops can sell at lower prices than high street opticians because they don’t have the overheads that come with town-centre shopping space, staff and display costs. Instead, online sellers can give you a close-up view of the frames along with all the information you need and a great price. All you need to do is make sure that you’ve worked out the total price – whether there is any additional charge for lenses, cases or delivery, for example, so that you know exactly how much you’ll need to pay.

Convenience – by shopping online you don’t just save money; you save time. You can choose and order your prescription glasses without leaving the comfort of your own home, and because they’re delivered to your door, you’ll have your new glasses sooner than you might think.

Budget for your Prescription Glasses

If you’re waiting for your sight test and you’re checking out the price of prescription glasses, or you have your prescription and you’re ready to order, check out the frames at Sight Station. We sell a wide range of traditional and trendy glasses frames. Just take a look at the frames we have on offer, and buy today, or call us on 01322 318511 to find out more.

And why not? When you’re wearing your prescription glasses for a good proportion of the day, it’s important that they are comfortable to wear and that you feel confident wearing them. Fortunately, as the number of people wearing glasses increases, the market for men’s frames gives you more choice than ever before.

Sophisticated Prescription Glasses

Whether you’re looking for prescription glasses for work or recreation, there are hundreds of frames to choose from. That may sound daunting, but once you’ve discounted the colours and styles you don’t like, making the right choice will be easy. Men’s frames are more stylish than ever, with a real eye on current trends and on helping you to look good whether you’re wearing glasses or not. For work, sophistication and style are easy to obtain, and if you just need prescription glasses for watching the TV or reading the paper, you can be a little more adventurous. Of course, if you like to make a statement with your accessories – ties, socks, belts, scarves and glasses – there’s plenty of choice in that area too:

Stylish black – elegant black frames never go out of fashion and if you want prescription glasses that are going to stand the test of time, this is a perfect choice. Small, rectangular frames and a lightweight build mean that you can wear these all day if you need to and still remain comfortable.

Statement specs – if you are looking for something a little different, why not try glasses with contrasting arms – where the frames are one colour or pattern and the arms another? You can create a statement look without being completely outrageous – unless, of course, you want to be.

New styles – there’s always something new on the market, whether it’s rounder glasses inspired by music legends such as Bob Dylan, John Lennon and Eric Clapton, or more affordable versions of top-end designer frames.

Men’s Prescription Glasses at Sight Station

We have a wide range of styles for men and women, all available and affordable online. Whether you’re looking for prescription glasses, reading glasses, sunglasses or accessories, we’re bound to stock something you’ll love.
That's right - it's no longer about accessorising with your prescription glasses, because today, it's all about accessorising for your prescription glasses! Continue reading →

Your specs are no longer just a little addition that you append to your chosen ensemble. Today, spectacles are a key feature. They should be your main feature. So how can you get your clothes, your shoes and your hair to work around your prescription glasses?

We no longer live in that awful age when prescription glasses were the bane of one’s life. Things have changed, and even though there are so many alternatives out there, such as laser eye surgery and contact lenses, people are still choosing to wear prescription glasses. They can be a great fashion accessory to add to any casual or party outfit, but sometimes they can be the main feature. If you have purchased statement spectacles that just scream, “look at me” then you will need to work your wardrobe around them.

3 Ways You Can Dress for Your Prescription Glasses

There are many ways that you get key pieces from your wardrobe, your shoe rack, your jewellery box and your hat cupboard to bring out the characteristics of your prescription glasses. Here are three ways that can help you work your clothing in all the right ways:

Shop for the right colours – when it comes to colours, you need a good selection of base colours such as blacks, browns, greys. These are ‘blank canvas’ colours than can make your glasses stand out. You also need a selection of matching colours to bring out the colour of your specs, and some shades that can either clash and/or compliment your frames. Clashing colours can work really well to create that ‘funky evening’ look – perfect for a night out!

Accessorise – a girl can never have too many accessories! Make sure that you find jewellery and hair pieces that will flatter your prescription glasses. Over-accessorising can completely drown your features, so always go shopping with your glasses on.

Understand your prescription glasses – take a long look at your frames. What do they say about you? Are they geeky and nerdy? Sexy secretary? Simple and understated? Your glasses are a great way to help you locate you personal style, and you should shop for clothes and accessories that fit around this.

If you’re still shopping for that perfect pair of prescription glasses that defines your personal style, browse the collection at Sight Station today. Shop online or call 01322 318 511 to find out more.

Don't take your prescription glasses for granted - make sure you get a regular check up with your optician. Continue reading →

Once you’ve got prescription glasses, you need to make sure that you keep your prescription up to date. For many people, the original prescription may not change for many years, allowing you to use the same glasses, or just to change the frames and lenses occasionally. For others, however, the first prescription is a sign of gradually changing vision, and it’s important that you see your optician on a regular basis.

Checking your Prescription Glasses

Now that you have a prescription for your vision, you should go for a regular eye test every 12 months. This gives your optician the opportunity to check the health of your eyes as well as the status of your vision so that your prescription can be altered if necessary. Obviously, if you are experiencing any difficulties or problems with your vision, you should make an appointment to go and see your optician as soon as possible – particularly if you notice any of the following things:

Blurriness – inability to focus easily or sight becoming blurred after focusing

Cloudiness – a clouding effect over the lens of your eye, sometimes accompanied by a halo around light, is often a symptom of cataracts. This condition is more common in elderly people, but you should see an optician as soon as possible.

Floaters – particles drifting across your field of vision, both when you have your eyes open and closed. Although often harmless, they can be a sign of retinal detachment, which an optician will need to diagnose and treat where possible. Flashes of light combined with these floaters need immediate attention.

Pain – if you have any ongoing pain in or around your eye, make sure your optician knows about it as soon as possible.

Of course, these are all symptoms of real optical problems, but you could be finding that you get headaches or feel uncomfortable when you are trying to focus and this is probably just a sign that your vision is changing and you need new prescription glasses. To be on the safe side, once you have a prescription, just make sure that you keep in touch with your optician so that any changes can be dealt with quickly.

Prescription glasses fall into the "accessories" category of the fashion market, which means you get access to some great styles. Continue reading →

Your glasses can say a lot about you, your personal style and your attitude to life. Today’s prescription glasses come in all shapes and sizes, which means that whatever fashion you follow, you can find frames that will work for you.

The Fashion for Prescription Glasses

We’ve always been influenced by what celebrities are wearing, and glasses are no exception. The difference today is that celebrities hold their value for longer, and A-list names like Madonna and George Clooney still appeal across the age range, although they are older than many of their fans. That means that when celebrities like this sport reading or prescription glasses, they can still be setting trends – and younger celebrities can also be less vain and wear super-trendy glasses if they need to. That means there’s plenty of fashion out there when it comes to buying your own prescription glasses, giving you a fantastic choice.

Prescription Glasses in all Shapes and Sizes

The great thing about fashion today is that whilst there are always the very latest trends to look for, older styles still have appeal. You don’t have to wear glasses that don’t really suit you just because they are trendy – you can pick frames that work with your face and hair and still look cool and chic. The sheer number of different styles, colours, patterns and textures in the glasses frames market means that you don’t have to compromise when it comes to choosing fashion frames that fit. What’s more, the fact that so many prescription glasses frames are very affordable means that you could even afford to buy more than one pair, so that you can co-ordinate outfits, or have one pair for work and another for hitting the town. When trends change, put your current pair aside as spares and buy the next big thing – because you can afford to.

Fashion Prescription Glasses at Sight Station

If following fashion is important to you, but you need prescription glasses to correct your vision, take a look at the Sight Station collection. We have a wide range of frames for men and women, and whether you need sunglasses, prescription glasses, reading glasses or clear-lens fashion frames, you’ll find a fantastic choice when you shop with us. All you need to do is have your prescription to hand – your optician can usually give you a copy free of charge – and choose the frames you want. All our frames and lenses are affordable and delivered to your door as soon as possible. Browse and buy online today or call us on 01322 318511 to find out more.

Social networking has become an essential part of everyday life. We network on our laptops, at work, on our phones (if you’re hip enough to have a smart-phone), and quite frankly, without our daily dose of Facebook, Twitter or Bebo, we just don’t quite feel ourselves. It’s no wonder that you can find pretty much anything on these sites, including the I Love Geeky Glasses fan page, created for people who wear prescription glasses. This Facebook fan page has almost a thousand dedicated fans who either wear prescription glasses, or have spectacle envy and would love a pair of their own.

Gok Wan in Social Media

Britain’s favourite fashion guru has been one of the biggest influences on spectacle wearers everywhere, not just in the UK, but on a global basis. His love and pride of his own prescription glasses has changed the way that we look at specs in the world of fashion. Not only has Gok turned glasses into a fashion accessory, but he’s created a whole new look that both men and women can imitate – the ‘geek chic’ and the ‘metro-sexual’.

Our spec-proud style guru is just as popular online as he is on our television screens and on our book shelves. The Gok Wan Facebook fan page has 344,901 fans and counting! Whether people love him for his prescription glasses, his impeccable fashion sense, or his love of curvy women, it’s clear to see that the world of social networking welcomes him with open arms.

Facebook Appreciates Prescription Glasses

The I Love Geeky Glasses fan page is close to reaching the thousand-fan mark. But that’s not all. Other appreciation groups on the networking site include We Love Nerd Glasses, Glasses Are Sexy, Glasses Are Cool, Prescription Glasses Are For Hotties, and many others. Twitter also has a part to play, giving celebs and role models such as Gok Wan a direct platform to speak to his fans through a simple status update. With 96,466 (and still counting) followers, Gok’s Twitter page is a great way to engage his adoring public. His recent Tweets talk about his love for seafood sticks, his support for fellow celebrity Fearne Cotton’s latest charity project, and launching a new fashion campaign at Debenhams.

Nail that job interview, blow them away with your presentation, make a life changing speech for your chosen charity - can your prescription glasses give you the confidence to excel? Continue reading →

Surely it’s wrong to say that we hide behind our prescription glasses. The spectacle clan will understand that the simple pair of frames which sits on the bridge of a wearer’s nose can do wonders for confidence, performance and concentration. But hiding? No – it’s definitely more like inspiring. Psychological though it is, this rudimentary assimilation of lens, metal and plastic can really make a difference in someone’s career.

Prescription glasses can be the device which the shy geeky girl at school hides behind as she disappears into her text books, but it can also be the device that drives a career woman to success. Do people take you more seriously when you have your glasses on? Do people assume that you are more intelligent? Can it give you the mask that you need to put on a good performance?

The Psychology behind a Pair of Prescription Glasses

Why is it that when you enter that board room, your glasses make you feel equipped to tackle anything? While some people feel naked without their glasses, others feel that they are a social hindrance. But believe it or not, communication is more than just words and sounds. Non-verbal communication is a big part of the image that we project to our audience, and one of these factors is eye contact. You cam use your eyes to project confidence and authority.

Prescription glasses can make someone look smarter, older, wiser, and confidence gained from this can trickle down to the wearer’s assertiveness. But prescription glasses can’t do this alone – you need to look at every aspect of your personal appearance. From your hair and make-up to the clothes you wear, to the colours you choose, and what you decide to put on your feet.

Find Your Confidence, Find Your Style

Having to wear prescription glasses is no longer unfashionable and undesirable. Today’s market offers so many stylish options, so you can make a smart impression at work, without looking dull and boring. Choosing the right pair of prescription glasses is important – you need to find a pair that defines your style, your personality and your creative flair. If you have an interview or a big presentation, you can show your colleagues, employers and peers that you are smart, sophisticated, yet you have personality and individuality.

Australian scientists have revealed that distance prescription glasses could be linked to intelligence and open-mindedness. Continue reading →

Good news? Some Aussie clever clogs have now proved that nerdiness is not linked to spectacle wearers. Even better news? This group of smarty pants have also found that distance prescription glasses can be related to some very desirable personality traits such as openness and intelligence.

Myopia is the medical term to describe short-sightedness, and if you wear prescription glasses for this reason then you could be scientific proof of these top five characteristics. Conducted by The Centre for Eye Research Australia, part of Melbourne University, the study invited a group of 633 twins and 278 people from families with myopia to answer a questionnaire on their personality traits. Subjects were evaluated on five key characteristics – extroversion, conscientiousness, agreeableness, open-mindedness and neuroticism. The results? People wearing prescription glasses, at the aversion of school ground bullies, could not be linked with introversion, conscientiousness or passiveness. They were in fact linked with intelligence, agreeableness and openness. Not only this, but the subjects were also known to have similar characteristics to their family members, who were also linked with distance prescription glasses.

The Centre for Eye Research Australia

The CERA is made up of dedicated researchers and their vision is become a leading research institute in the world. They are already recognised for their incredible work in discovering the causes of eye diseases. Their work is used to provide findings that can help improve all the processes involved with prescription glasses and eye diseases. Covering everything from diagnosis, treatment and prevention, their research can make a huge amount of difference for opticians and those who require prescription glasses, and those with very serious vision impairment.

Their recent experiment linking distance prescription glasses and personality has tackled the age old stereotype that spec wearers are nerds. The study was published in the Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science Journal. In this well known journal the Melbourne University researchers wrote: “The long held view that myopic persons are introverted and conscientious may reflect intelligence-related stereotypes rather than real correlations.”

So while this research can clear up an old stereotype, it doesn’t prove that someone with prescription glasses will definitely be intelligent. But of course, as the clever people that we are, we knew that already. Perhaps this experiment just proves a point that stereotyping anyone is a foolish thing to do.
